From Engagement Session to Wedding Day: Why Building a Relationship Matters

filed under:

WEDDING

One of the biggest concerns I hear from couples is that they're worried they'll feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. Almost every couple says some version of, "We're not good at taking photos."

The truth is, you don't have to be. The purpose of an engagement session isn't to practice posing perfectly. It's simply to spend time together while I guide you through an experience that feels natural and genuine. By the end of the session, most couples realize they don't need to know what to do with their hands or memorize poses. They just need to focus on each other. That's where the real magic happens.

By the time the wedding day arrives, everything feels familiar. You already know how I photograph, how I guide you, and what to expect throughout the process. Instead of spending the first hour of your wedding day getting comfortable with your photographer, you're able to fully step into the experience and be present from the very beginning.

I noticed this so clearly with Mariah and Alec. When I arrived on their wedding day, there was already a sense of ease between us. We weren't introducing ourselves or figuring things out for the first time. We had already spent an evening together during their engagement session, exploring, laughing, and creating photographs that reflected who they truly are. That familiarity allowed us to pick up right where we left off.

Because of that foundation, they were able to focus less on the camera and more on what mattered most: celebrating their marriage, soaking in every moment, and being fully present with one another. And honestly, that's always my goal.

As a wedding photographer, I spend one of the most important days of your life right alongside you. I'll be there during emotional moments, quiet moments, joyful celebrations, and everything in between. Because of that, I believe there's something incredibly valuable about getting to know each other before the wedding day arrives.

An engagement session gives us the opportunity to slow down and spend time together without the pressure of a wedding timeline. We get to learn how we naturally interact with one another. I learn your personalities, your dynamic as a couple, what makes you laugh, and the little ways you connect. At the same time, you get to experience my approach to photography and discover that taking photos doesn't have to feel awkward or intimidating.
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings is when I get to start the story long before the wedding day itself.

Looking back through both Mariah and Alec's engagement session and wedding gallery reminded me exactly why I love engagement sessions so much. While the beautiful photos are certainly a bonus, engagement sessions are about so much more than creating images for save-the-dates or wedding websites. They're about creating connection, building trust, and laying the foundation for an incredible wedding day experience.

Beautiful images are important, but what I want even more is for my couples to actually enjoy the experience of being photographed. I want them to feel comfortable, confident, and free to be themselves. The best photographs happen when you're not worrying about how you look. They happen when you're focused on the person standing in front of you.

Getting to document both seasons of Mariah and Alec's story—from engagement to marriage—was such a gift. Looking back through both galleries feels like watching a story unfold, and it's a reminder of why I believe engagement sessions are one of the most valuable parts of the wedding photography experience.

If you're planning your wedding, consider your engagement session as more than just another item on the checklist. It's an opportunity to build trust, create connection, and begin telling your story before the wedding day ever arrives. When the wedding day finally comes, you'll walk into it feeling comfortable, confident, and ready to simply enjoy every moment.
